Norwegian Epic Cruise Ship First-hand Expert Review

norwegian epic mediterranean cruise

With over 20 years of experience planning trips and logistics at her full-time job and for herself, she's become a pro at crafting unforgettable tasty itineraries. She's always on the hunt for delicious, fun travel destinations and cruise itineraries. She firmly believes that life is short and we must make the most of it, so always say yes to dessert.

CRUISE SHIP HIGHLIGHTS

We did not see the Cirque Dreams Epicurean show and now I’m kicking myself. I have heard so many wonderful things about it and will definitely opt to see this show next time. This dinner theater takes places in the SpiegelTent, a custom-designed venue that resembles a circus tent. An international championship cast shows off their best ballroom dance moves with plenty of European flair. From Grand Viennese waltzes to the sensual Tango and provocative Rumba, experience all their passion as they heat up the stage.

The Thermal Suites also feature everything you’d expect to see in a high-end spa including a steam room, sauna, heated chaise loungers, and rain showers. The changing rooms have lockers and are gender specific with gender-specific steam rooms and saunas, but the rest of the spa is mixed-gender. When you’re on a cruise vacation, you expect even the food included to be up to par with all their other dining establishments. On their other ships, I had wonderful meals all around. The list of new (redesigned) facilities includes a photo gallery (deck 5), library (deck 7), card room (deck 7) and the new SplashGolf (kids mini-golf course).

They’ve become so popular that all future ships built for Norwegian Cruise Line have included solo cabins. Cruising with the whole family is a memorable experience for everyone onboard Epic! Each cruise onboard this epic cruise ship is designed so each member of your family, from great grandpa all the way down to the littlest member is happy the whole time! There is no better way to experience the warm and vibrant Mediterranean than on a Norwegian cruise. Explore the sights, sounds and flavors of different cultures – all on your own terms.

Itinerary for the Epic

We did not like the idea of a set time to eat dinner. We wanted to have the option to eat when and where we wanted. We were located on deck 14 mid-ship, the perfect location as we were one floor below the Garden Cafe. Our room was also equipped with a small coffee maker, great for that quick cup of java when you first wake up and a mini-bar fridge.

norwegian epic mediterranean cruise

We loved the unique experience at the authentic Brazilian steakhouse. We tried to enjoy as many of the restaurants as possible. Also, because there is so much to explore you don’t want to miss anything…….trust me, if you don’t know about it you probably won’t find it on your NLC Mediterranean cruise. There are so many great Norwegian European cruises to choose from.

Experience a New Port Every Day of Your Cruise

The Martini Bar has a great vibe with lounge chairs placed well for the random live music that plays in the space. It also has a decent-sized bar to sit at where the bartenders will make you a martini of choice. I find that the skill level of the bartenders is lacking with good martinis, unfortunately. Casual pub-style restaurant/bar open late serving everything from fish and chips, burgers, and chicken wings to healthier options like salads and soups.

The first day of your Norwegian Epic cruise is an exciting day of departure from Barcelona. After settling into your cabin and familiarizing yourself with your surroundings, it’s time to explore the ship. Take a stroll along the promenade deck, relax by one of the pools, or enjoy a drink at one of the many bars and lounges onboard. As the ship sets sail and heads towards its first destination, take in the breathtaking views of Barcelona’s coastline from the deck.

Explore the highlights of this region in 7 days on one of our Western Mediterranean cruises. With fewer days at sea, you will get the most amount of time to explore some of the Mediterranean's best hits. Cruise from Rome, Athens or Barcelona and experience Italy, Croatia and Spain on one of our Grand Mediterranean cruises.

There, you can savor classic Dalmatian cuisine, known for its masterful use of seafood paired with aromatic herbs, olive oil and vegetables. Treat yourself to a luxury vacation of epic proportions in The Haven on Norwegian Epic. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors open to your own sweeping balcony.

Soak up the sun by day around the pool and enjoy the outdoor buffet at the adults-only Ibiza-inspired beach club at the back of the ship. The entertainment is non-stop, as the pool floor rises to become a dance floor at night. If you are looking to add a bit of luxury on your cruise, you can always opt for the luxurious Haven Suites.

I want to share everything I've learned and hope to make your next cruise vacation as enjoyable as possible. One of my favorite spaces on the Epic is the Mandara Spa and Thermal Suite. When it was introduced, the spa was the largest at sea! While it’s no longer the biggest or the most fabulous, it’s still an incredible retreat. Modeled after traditional Turkish Baths, it features hot tubs and a relatively large therapy pool with various jets for aqua therapy.

The 4,100-passenger ship is truly a floating city with restaurants featuring cuisines from all around the world, like Wasabi Sushi Bar and Moderno Churrascaria. At night you can enjoy something a little different like a live performance. Check out Fat Cat’s Jazz & Blues Club where the rhythm is contagious. No matter if you are cruising with a big group, or sailing solo in the revolutionary and award winning Studio Staterooms, you’ll have a blast onboard Epic. As the captain of this incredible website, my mission is to provide you with the ultimate sailing experience.

Explore Mediterranean

(Careful, the items in the mini-bar fridge are usually not included in your cruise rate and are usually an additional charge). We arrived at the Barcelona cruise port to check-in for our cruise. Check-in on the NCL Epic is similar to an airline check-in apart from getting your photo taken. We were issued a room key card which was also used for all purchases on board the cruise ship and was our ID card.

Balcony Cabins

When you’re there, you wouldn’t know that you’re on a cruise ship. The lounge is what you’d expect in the evenings and is adult-only starting around 9 pm. Other than serving the purpose of a bar, club, or lounge, Bliss is also used during the day for private events and gatherings. The Norwegian Epic cruise ship by NCL is a unique vessel known for being one of a kind. It was built in 2009 and set sail in 2010, offering a mix of positive and negative experiences for passengers.

We booked our Norwegian Mediterranean Cruise with Air Canada Vacations as they offer so many advantages. Air Canada Vacations guarantees the lowest airfare, reliable travel, flexible payment options, and other great features. It took a long time to convince my husband to try a new way of travelling, but I think he’s finally hooked. We have done our research, read blogs, Norwegian Epic reviews and got some advice from expert cruisers. We finally decided that the Norwegian Epic cruise was the best cruise for us. When choosing a cruise we first looked at where we wanted to go.

norwegian epic mediterranean cruise

The food quality is usually very good, a notable feature of NCL. Again, however, on a recent cruise, there were more misses than normal, especially in specialty dining. I believe this is temporary due to all of the supply chain issues. After a planned Transatlantic in December 2022 on the Epic, I’ll confirm if the dining has improved. While we don’t have children or travel with other couples who do, we’ve met plenty of families that love the activities on board the Epic. The Entourage Club is a great gathering space for teens / tweens with video games, consoles, etc.

These staterooms have a full size bed for one guest and a window view to the corridor. To help you navigate the ship and make the most of your cruise experience, the Norwegian Epic offers an orientation session. This session is led by the ship’s crew and provides valuable information on the ship’s layout, dining options, entertainment venues, and activities. During the orientation, you’ll receive a map of the ship and have any questions answered by the knowledgeable crew members.

We suggest you get there early if you want to see them on one of the other nights outside the theater. We watched The Beatles the first night in the theater, and then they played in one of the smaller lounges throughout the week. We had it on the Norwegian Pearl, which was fairly good, so we thought it would be the same. We were given a table right by the stage on the last night and had a fantastic meal with wonderful service. We had our embarkation lunch here, which should have been a sign of things to come – the food was tasteless.

When it’s slower during the day, and you’re up for experimenting, they’ll usually make you something off the menu for you to try. Follow our social media and blog for the latest cruise and travel news, including our best vacation deals. With an overwhelming world of choices, we understand you may need some personal assistance to plan your perfect vacation. From finding the right destination to choosing the best departure date, we're here to help. Plus, our experienced travel consultants have access to exclusive vacation deals to make sure you get the best value for your time and money. Italian food is a family favorite in most households and a cruiser favorite onboard !

The problem with this barbershop is that it’s open to everyone passing by it and not far from the casino. Don’t forget to pack these cruise items that will help enhance your cruise vacation. We now understand what makes this ship different from the others and noticed the service’s downfall compared to all our other cruises. We decided the itinerary was enough for us, and we’d judge the ship later.

The 4200-passenger ship Norwegian Epic is the latest cruise ship owned by Norwegian Cruise Line before the launch of Norwegian Breakaway (2013). She sails the most in the Caribbean and Europe offering new experience and entertainment proposed by the Blue Man Group at sea. Norwegian Epic offers new things like the Studios, planned for people traveling solo, and the private Haven. There are also a lot of options for dining such as traditional fine dining, endless buffets plus gourmet French, Japanese Teppanyaki, a traditional steakhouse and more. Bliss is the “Ultra Lounge” or nightclub brand on Norwegian Ships. The Bliss Lounge on the Epic is quite impressive given it’s essentially a well-done night club at sea.

And when all is said and done, enjoy a pamper session at Mandara Spa. With so much to do, we’ll always have you coming back for more. Explore the history of the Mediterranean, relax on the waters of the Transatlantic, or feel the balmy breezes of the Caribbean.. Whatever you choose to do, Norwegian Epic is sure to dazzle. Awarded Best Cruise Ship Entertainment by Frommer’s, Norwegian Epic keeps the bar high with Burn the Floor. Not only is Norwegian Epic offering world-class performers but a new wave of accommodations as well - from Studios, designed and priced for the solo traveler, to privacy in The Haven.

The first European to cross it, Fernand de Magellan, gave the strait its name. It then continued to draw explorers such as Thomas Cavendish or Frenchman Jules Dumont d'Urville. Enjoy a recap of your expedition experiences in Patagonia and the fjords from our Expedition Team. Visit the Science Center if you have unanswered questions about the things you've seen, or to complete any observations for the Citizen Science projects. This evening get to know your fellow expeditioners and friendly expedition team and crew at a welcomedinner to celebrate the start of a thrilling adventure. After a night in romantic Buenos Aires, you'll fly to Ushuaia and sail to wild Cape Horn, where we'll attempt to land if we can. We'll cruise north along the west coast of South America, with its UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, breathtaking national parks and remote communities. The Chilean Fjords were carved out by retreating glaciers from the past millennia. The fjords have resulted in a series of waterways that must be navigated in order to get to coastal destinations in Patagonia, such as Punta Arenas and Ushuaia. Today, the Chilean Fjords are known for their beauty and local wildlife, including whales, dolphins, and penguins.

Exploration days

Puerto Edén’s isolation is also due to the region’s climate, which includes frequent rainfall, high humidity, and heavy storms. There are no roads to, from, or even within the village, just boardwalks and footpaths that connect the homes of its fewer-than 200 inhabitants. The village is also home to the last-known community of the indigenous Kawéskar people, with only dozen living here.

Topics may include periods of pre-Columbian history, the geology of the surrounding mountains and islands, the folklore of the local communities, and much more. If curious seabirds come fly alongside the ship, the Expedition Team might also help you spot and identify them from the deck. In addition to taking pictures from our journey, he or she will be available to help you learn the basics of expedition photography. Thanks to the oxygen-rich, plankton-packed cold waters sourced from the glacier, the fjord is also recognized as part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. It is not uncommon to see seals and sea lions poking their heads out of the water or roaming on the shores. Keep an eye out for a range of seabirds soaring above or perched on miniature islands of floating ice.

Valparaíso, a UNESCO Gem

Tidal conditions permitting, we hope to visit Puerto Edén, an enchanting village only accessible by sea. The 250-strong community here contains some of the last remaining members of the Indigenous Kawésqar people, offering a fascinating insight into Patagonian culture. Setting sail from the UNESCO hilltop gem of Valparaíso, we’ll sail south to picturesque Niebla and charming Castro. Continuing along the west coast to Patagonia, you’ll discover breathtaking panoramic scenery and be welcomed by remote communities to learn how they live. At Puerto Natales, you can choose to visit the world-renowned Torres del Paine National Park with its towering granite mountains. Spend the night at a comfortable hotel located just outside of the national park, offering superb mountain and river views.

Intimate Ships

Sailing into the awe-inspiring Chilean fjords, we encounter a rugged, maze-like coastline with a multitude of islands, steep mountains and glittering glaciers. This is the perfect region to explore expedition-style, and we’ll do just that. We’ll attempt a landing at the legendary Cape Horn, before winding our way through fabled waterways toward our adventure’s end in Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world. Sailing into the awe-inspiring Chilean fjords, we’ll encounter a rugged, maze-like coastline with a multitude of islands, steep mountains, and glittering glaciers. Want to see penguins, whales, albatross, and other animals endemic to the Patagonia or Antarctica region?

Head out on deck to witness some of the most beautiful landscapes on the continent as your Captain skilfully navigates the ship through these famed channels. Keep your camera ready for views of the city’s colourful palafitos – stilt houses along the waterfront. For an insight into local history and culture, head to the Museo Regional de Castro and the Modern Art Museum. We engaged them for a two-day individual tour (just 2 of us, a knowledgeable guide and a driver). A look at their website and a quick email to Julia would be worth while.

Visit Quemchi and fall for the charming fishing harbour and its colourful wooden houses and churches, its pleasant narrow streets and its fish market brimming with oysters, clams and crabs. Cross over to admire its peaceful picture-postcard landscape, home to myriad birds. Stretching across Argentina and Chile, Patagonia covers a large part of the southern tip of Latin America. A cruise in Patagonia is a journey of discovery through splendid landscapes of fjords and snow-capped mountains. Extending across parts of both Argentina and Chile, Patagonia evokes that exotic sense of distant lands at the far side of the world.

You will have to look long and hard to find a cruise line more fair than that. This is one of the things that keeps us spending what travel funds we have with Viking. Use these expert reviews and travel guides written by AdventureSmith staff to help imagine what your Chile cruise can be. Our expert staff have experienced various Chile cruise itineraries and explain the nuances in these detailed guides. A medical form for all travelers, signed by their doctor, is required for every departure. In addition, we highly recommend our travelers protect their investment with travel insurance that includes trip cancellation and other benefits. Our partners at Travelex Insurance offer a variety of plans and policies to fit every trip and budget. Coverage for a pre-existing medical condition is also available if you purchase the Travel Select plan within 15 days of the initial trip payment; refer to plan details. Nothing says a Chilean Fjords cruise better than the see the sun rise over the Pio XI glacier or watching a whale breach before your very eyes..

Admire this serene maze of waterways surrounded by islands, glaciers, and steep mountains. Head to the deck and bask in the view of the mighty mountains plunging into the icy water, while keeping an eye out for wildlife such as elephant seals, dolphins, and whales. As the ship ventures north, enter one of the many channels and fjords of Patagonian Chile. The ship may sail through Montañas Fjord, a long fjord flanked by rugged mountains and a number of glaciers including Herman, Bernal and Paredes. Sail the legendary Beagle Channel and marvel at the snow-covered peaks of rugged Patagonia.

He therefore named them ‘Patagons’ after a literary character in a Spanish novel that was popular at the time. While the indigenous people here were slightly taller than most Europeans at the time, they were far from giants. Thus, we have the region the world now knows as ‘Patagonia.’ Of course, now is known more for the beautiful Andean seascapes, rather than its giants! Attend one of the many interesting lectures hosted by the Expedition Team, perhaps about the seabirds, geography, or indigenous culture of the region. Join an art workshop, where you can paint something inspired by your experiences from the expedition, or participate in one of the proposed Citizen Science projects in the Science Center. Throughout your journey, the Expedition Team will give lectures in the Science Center and share their extensive knowledge of the region.

Well, if you’re not familiar with the term, an expedition team is a group of adventurers and educators in the region. Hand-picked by us, they are experts in the Chilean Fjords and Antarctica and offer superb insights and information on your destination. All our expedition teams are well-versed in the conservation and ecology of the area and, in the case of the Chilean Fjords and Antarctica, are aware of current IAATO guidelines.

Your expedition ship awaits you in Valparaíso, the 'Jewel of the Pacific'. Built on steep hillsides overlooking the ocean, it's well worth spending time in this UNESCO-listed city. Weather and time permitting, your Captain may even sail close to Cape Horn. The goal for the day is a scenic cruise through Garibaldi Fjord in Alberto de Agostini National Park, all the way up to Garibaldi Glacier. The rugged landscape features steppe, forest and desert punctuated by glaciers and lakes, and you can choose to see it either on a panoramic bus or hiking tour.

The 500 residents here form a close-knit community that is still closely connected to the logging trade. The town includes a school, library, medical center, police station, and some restaurants. There are no streets within the village per se, rather a maze of boardwalks that weave over the water and around the mountain base. A tour of the village with a local guide is also available as an optional excursion.

Set against the magnificent backdrop of the Martial Glacier, Ushuaia vies for the title of the world’s southernmost city. The village is known for being the home to approximately 25 Kawésqar indigenous inhabitants–roughly 10% of the population of the village. The village is connected by beautiful timber boardwalks called pasarelas.

Young Explorer is a complimentary, year-round program on selected Hurtigruten ships for curious and active youth aged 6-12 years of age. The Pio XI Glacier in Bernardo O'Higgins National Park is a truly extraordinary sight. Growing by as much as 50 meters a day—as other glaciers recede—it's the longest glacier in the Southern Hemisphere outside of Antarctica.

Must-Sees - Patagonia and the Chilean fjords

For yachters, rounding Cape Horn is a maritime feat, comparable, for them, to summiting Mount Everest. The notoriously turbulent waters make it impossible to guarantee a landing here. But if fortune plays in our favor that day and the weather is stable enough to dock on the island and go up to the cape, you may be among a select few in the world to set foot on glorious Cape Horn. Designed to be the ultimate 6-star experience of a lifetime for only up to 228 guests, enjoy a smooth voyage to the most remarkable and remote locations that few will ever visit. But with the benefit of our modern instruments, we'll attempt to safely land on and explore the cape—if the conditions cooperate, of course. Our journey takes us through the rich waters of the Humboldt Current as we pass over the Peruvian trench—a tectonically active, 5,000-foot-deep gouge in the sea floor.

In the Corcovado Gulf, enjoy spotting a good variety of seabirds including black-browed albatross, southern giant petrel, southern fulmar and long-distant migrants such as the migratory Arctic skua. Continue to keep watch for whales in the Corcovado Gulf while sailing into Chiloé, an archipelago of lush islands and a land of myths and legends, unique folklore and culinary traditions. It’s a region blessed with natural beauty and culture, cherished by Chileans. Explore this mythical island with its colorful timber churches, 16 of which have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. GENERAL RESTRICTIONSCruise fares listed are cruise only in U.S. dollars, per person, based on double occupancy.

Viking Ocean Cruises

Embark into the unknown lands and islands of the southern tip of South America and visit places only now accessible to travelers on this Chilean fjords cruise. Take in seldom-seen channels, waterfalls and glaciers while searching for wildlife within this rugged, magnificent land. The village sprang up as part of the timber industry, explaining the village’s rustic look—it’s made entirely from wood sourced from Guaitecas cypress trees in the surrounding forest. Common throughout the Aysén region, migrant workers from Chiloé in the north came here to work, and typical of Chilotan style, many of the houses are constructed on stilts.

We leave the well-trodden path once again today to visit remote Caleta Tortel. Lying at the mouth of Rio Baker, Chile's largest river, this charming village is home to just 500 inhabitants. If conditions are right, we'll launch our small expedition boats to take a closer look at this remarkable glacier, where ice occasionally calves off into the waters below. The rugged landscape has steppe, forest and desert, punctuated by glaciers and lakes. Look out for Chilean Flamingos and you may even spot the mighty Andean condor. As we sail north along the Chilean coast, join your Expedition Team for fascinating lectures on topics like pre-Columbian history, the geology of our surroundings and the folklore of local communities.

Cerro Alegre and Concepción have arguably the best views, while the historic port district has Colonial architecture, bustling mercados, and the maritime and modern art museums. This colorful and unusual city is fascinating, so why not stick around for an extra day or two? You can also join a Post-Program to Easter Island, famous for its mysterious statues of giant heads. South of the San Rafael Laguna National Park, you’ll find Caleta Tortel, in between the Northern and Southern Patagonian Ice Fields.
